Are you on a path to financial independence?

Along the way, have you started to realize that you don’t want (or need) to keep pushing as hard to reach FI?

Maybe you’d reach FI a bit later, but who cares if you are enjoying your life along the way?

Do you have an idea (or ideas) in mind but wonder how you could make it work financially? Does it feel scary to step away from the standard life (or even standard FI) path?

If so, the Slow FI retreat is designed for you.

In-Person Gatherings are Life-Changing

Something unique happens when we intentionally step outside of our normal routine and daily life. A different level of awareness and inspiration happens. So many of our life-changing realizations happen when we are outside of our daily grind.

Plus, building a like-minded community of people who really “get” you is the #1 way to work toward your goals and find joy in the process. While I love community that happens virtually and online, there’s something special that happens when people get together in-person. All of the informal connection adds up in a way that structured Zoom calls can’t compare.

At this retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to cultivate relationships with others who are passionate about building financial freedom, defying societal expectations, and designing lives they love.

Most people in your life probably don’t understand your goals…  But, these people will!

Join Us (the Fioneers) and 40 Slow FI Enthusiasts for this intimate 3-Day Retreat.

Featured Speakers for the 2025 Slow FI Retreat

headshot

Marie Coleman-Johns

Marie is a live event artist and small business owner, with an 18-year background as a social marketing strategist. She loves to travel, be out on the water with her stand-up paddleboard or kayak, and plan her next vacation with her husband, two dogs, and three cats.

Marie transitioned from a full-time senior leadership role in the spring of 2024. Since then, she took a sabbatical and invested in building her calligraphy and engraving business, Maiden September. She is also a marketing course creator helping small business owners achieve their goals with “no burnout” marketing strategies.

Having a portfolio career provides Marie with stability and flexibility as she builds her ideal lifestyle – one that involves a focus on travel, meaningful work, health, and relationships.

Marie’s lifestyle inspiration comes from her ADHD and desire to “choose her own adventure” on any given day.

Kamran Ayub

Kamran is a solopreneur, world-class educator, international speaker, father of three, avid gamer, word traveler, and DIY enthusiast.

After negotiating a summer sabbatical from his employer in 2021, Kamran quit his corporate job in 2022 to become an entrepreneur. He has tested out several different self-employment options, and now focuses on growing Keep Track of Your Games, a “Goodreads for gamers” app and teaching tech skills to developers as a part-time contract instructor.

Since Kamran has reached Coast FI, he now works part-time (about 20 hours/week) to cover his family’s expenses.

He also downshifts during the Minnesota summer to play video games, work on amateur home-building projects like his backyard office, and slow travel with his wife and three kids.

Kamran’s lifestyle inspiration comes from his grandparents who worked part-time while he was young and retired early, and from a 6-month sabbatical he and his wife took in 2015, where they lived in France and traveled around Europe.
Casey Headshot

Casey Johnson

Casey is an avid outdoorswoman and adventurer who loves to hike, camp, paddle, climb, ski, and scuba-dive. She is also a scientist and animal lover who works in veterinary medicine, helping pet parents navigate emergencies with their furry family members.

Over the last two years, Casey has been on our journey to make her job work for her, not the other way around. She negotiated a set schedule working three days each week and a month-long sabbatical that allowed her to decompress and take a bucket-list trip to Patagonia.

These changes gave Casey the space to go on a journey of self-discovery. She embarked on a year of novelty (her version of the year of yes), which included trying out one new activity every month. Through this exploration, she found peace and joy and learned to have fun again.

During this process, she found a community of amazing (and completely ordinary) women doing incredible things. She’s now on a mission to share these stories and inspire more women to follow their dreams through her Substack Newsletter, Her Adventurous Life.

Chris Mamula

Chris is a writer, author, part-time financial planner, devoted husband and father, and outdoor enthusiast.

Chris used principles of traditional retirement planning, combined with creative lifestyle design, to retire from a career as a physical therapist at the age of 41. He then moved across the country from Pennsylvania to Utah to pursue his passion for outdoor adventures and his desire to be a stay-at-home-dad to his young daughter.

After poor experiences with the financial industry early in his professional life, Chris educated himself on all things personal finance. He began writing about wealth building, DIY investing, financial planning, early retirement, and lifestyle design at Can I Retire Yet? and is the primary author of the book Choose FI: Your Blueprint to Financial Independence.

Chris’ interests continue to evolve post-FI. During the pandemic, he decided to take coursework and the exam to become a CFP. Chris now works 10 hours/week doing financial planning with individuals and couples at Abundo Wealth, a low-cost, advice-only financial planning firm.

Frequently Asked Questions

To keep the retreat small and intimate, we are only selling 35-40 tickets.

With this number of attendees, you will have the opportunity to get to know other participants and interact with speakers.

If you are unable to attend the event after buying a ticket, please let us know as soon as possible. If you let us know at least three months before the event, and we can fill the spot with someone from the waitlist, you would be issued a full refund minus transaction fees. If the spot goes unfilled, no refund will be issued.

If you cancel within three months of the event, no refund will be issued.

Because we know that some people would prefer a private room, we’ve made this an option at an additional cost.

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer childcare for an event of this size.

The event content and structure is focused on adults (and thus, not suitable for children).

Immediately upon registering, you will be redirected to a survey to share lodging preferences, dietary restrictions, t-shirt size, etc. I will also share this survey within a few days if you do not fill this out immediately.

After all tickets are sold, we will create a spreadsheet to share your contact and flight information. This will allow you to find others to carpool with, if you’d like.

Two months before the event, we will provide you with a detailed agenda for the event and invite you to the online platform we will use to communicate with other retreat participants.

Yes! The retreat content will cater to people at any point in their Slow FI journey – from people who are completely new to the idea to people who are ready to make (or have already made) significant lifestyle changes.

The activities and breakout groups will be tailored to support people at different levels in their Slow FI journey.

No! The content of this retreat is not designed for bloggers or other content creators. The retreat will focus on financial independence and using your financial freedom to design your life.

If you are a content creator, you are very welcome to attend. This retreat will help you design your best life as you share your story and create great content.

We’ve decided to not allow 1-day attendance. The content (panels, workshops, and breakout groups) builds up over the course of the weekend, so you need to attend the full event to get the experience.
