I heard about Coast FI from the Fioneers in 2020, and it has completely changed my life. At the time, I was overworked and stressed out with a 50% savings rate on the path to FIRE.
After downloading their calculator and realizing I had already reached Coast FI, I was able to downshift my work, lean into flexibility and freedom now, and let compound interest do the heavy lifting for the next few decades.
Now, I’m self-employed and make enough money to cover my little family of three’s living expenses on less than 15 hours or work per week. I wouldn’t trade this flexible lifestyle for anything.

For Meg, financial independence was never about not working. She’s always had so many hobbies and ideas to explore. Instead, FI could provide her with the ability to explore these options. In 2020, Meg went part-time and has built a portfolio career doing work she loves.
On the first leg if our camper van trip, we spent about three weeks exploring New Mexico and Northern Arizona. Here are our favorite places. We hope you’ll add them to a road trip itinerary of your own.
Kathryn started traveling full-time in an RV over three years ago as a traveling speech language pathologist. In the last two years, she’s built a virtual business that allows her to work from anywhere.
We are currently living our converted campervan for 3 1/2 months working as location independent entrepreneurs. What made this possible for us is that we didn’t immediately jump from step one to step one hundred. We experimented. We tried things out. We learned and adjusted. We took so many small actions until this finally felt like the logical next step.
I’m excited to bring you a new Slow FI interview with Lisa. She and I have uncanny similarities. We both worked in nonprofit HR, experienced mental health challenges, and made career changes.
